What It Means To Be A Music Fan In 2013

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Oct 04, 2013

Here's what it means to be a music fan in 2013. See if you agree.

Following your favorite band/band members on twitter ... and then tweet at you -- and then you DIE!

Being okay with additional charges for concert tickets...

Because you got the pre sale code anyway!

Your wardrobe becoming band ts...

Because what better way to promote them then right on your chest!

Pre ordering an album, and then sitting at your computer watching it download at 12:01 am!

Hunting down rare merch on eBay because you can't get enough, and you NEED the first pressing of the vinyl release!

Going to Warped Tour every summer and meeting your favorite bands...

And discovering new ones.

You agree with THIS.

Knowing the tour routing and when they're in the US vs overseas.

Watching music videos over and over AND OVER to make the perfect gif...

 .... Or interviews.

Waiting anxiously for new announcements on their Facebook accounts and making a new status to "break" the news before all your friends.

Creating a fan account and supporting them 10 times more then their label.

Getting lyrics tattooed on your body because they're what made you feel whole.

And saving all of your concert tickets because one day you will show them to your kids to explain what made you who you are today.

So, do you agree?

Tell Me Why: Panic! At The Disco 'Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!' Discussion

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Oct 03, 2013

I need your help.

Earlier this week Panic! At The Disco put up a full stream of their album, Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die on YouTube -- and I am struggling to like it. When the first single, “Miss Jackson” came out I had a very optimistic outlook on what would be coming our way on October 8th; but I am kind of disappointed. The album is absolutely not what I expected and it lost my attention. It’s been frustrating to feel this way because I’ve been looking forward to this record. I have always been a P!ATD fan and have enjoyed seeing their progression from album to album.

So I thought it would be good if we all got together and shared our honest thoughts on the album. Maybe you can help me -- or maybe I just need to spend more time with it. So please take a listen and let me know what you think and tell my why you’re happy or disappointed in the album.

Either way, #musicrules

5 Reasons To Love Echosmith's 'Talking Dreams'

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Oct 02, 2013

Echosmith’s debut album is almost here! I know you guys have been falling in love with them over the past few months, and their debut album will make you fall EVEN harder. Talking Dreams is romantic, dreamy and whimsical; all while making you dance or visualize you’re lying in a field of daisies.

To break it down, here's 5 reasons to love Echosmith’s Talking Dreams.

1. Layers – There are a lot of sounds on this album. Layers of vocals, various instruments, and emotions. The music is completely encompassing and you can get caught up in these songs if you allow yourself to. I suggest you do.

2. Harmonies – Oh my goodness. The vocals on the album are stunning and the harmonies melt like butter.

3. “Tell Her You Love Her” - I love EVERYTHING about this song. The story, the sentiment, the vocals, and especially the build up. It's beautiful.

4. Their Sound – Taking Dreams is cohesive and showcases all sides of Echosmith. We have love songs, dance numbers and empowering lyrics their fans will appreciate. With anthemic songs as well as love songs, fans will get a real sense of who this band is in just 12-tracks; although they will just want more.

5. “Surround You” – The closing track starts off soft and builds into BIG passion. This one will take you far away and have you daydreaming about being in love. It’s the kind of song you want playing during a montage of your love story.

Overall the album has variety while still holding onto a cohesive sound. Echosmith is an incredibly talented group of young musicians, and I'm thrilled to hear what YOU think. The album really does feel like a talking dream. #musicrules

You can pre order Talking Dreams here or pick it up on October 8th.

State Champs has a new music video for, "Hard To Please" on MTVU today! As a teen who grew up loving pop/punk and spent weekend nights at the hockey rink, this video was made for me! There is some humor, some hockey, fistfights and some performance shots. Perfectly pop/punk.

The video is up for this week's "You Pick The Video That Gets On Air," so let's help these boys out. Here's where you can vote.

They also have a new album, The Finer Things coming out next week! #musicrules

Barbara Walters Threw Katy Perry Shade?

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Sep 27, 2013

Katy Perry has arguably the most highly anticipated albums of the fall. PRISM, is the follow up to KP’s record breaking Teenage Dream and with the success of the album’s lead single, “Roar” -- this album will no doubt be a sweet treat.

Katy talked to Billboard to help promote the new album and shared an awkward story from working with Barbara Walters on her 2011 Most Fascinating People special. Don’t mess with Babs y’all.

“When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, ‘You know, I’ve only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?’ I was like, ‘Oh, snap! Yes, bitch!’ I think it’s the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me. I just couldn’t tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, ‘Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break.’”

Fans may remember this was around the time Katy’s marriage to comedian Russell Brand was falling apart. Also from the Judy Garland comment, we can assume Walters waited over 4 hours for Katy to arrive.

The new interview also confirms “Unconditionally” will be Katy’s next official single. No date has been confirmed for the release but we can assume it will be in the coming weeks.

We The Kings Need Your Help For Their Fourth Album

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Sep 26, 2013

We The Kings have announced they will be using Indeigogo Campaign to raise money to record and release their fourth studio album.

“You guys [the fans] are the reason we’ve made it this far to begin with,” says lead guitarist Hunter Thomsen. Front man Travis Clark added,  “You can expect this to be the best album we've ever made, because there are no strings attached.  We are the ones deciding everything about this album and with your help we can truly make the best WTK album yet!”

They have decided to take matter into their own hands and fund this new release without a label. So what will that mean?

“Things without a label, they’ve been...different.  It’s pretty much taken everything we possibly can to do anything & everything,” says Clark when asked about life without a label.  “We hope you’ll contribute as much as you can to help our dream of making our 4th studio album all by ourselves.”

Contribute here and check out all the perks.

Touche Amore Record Release Show In LA

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Sep 26, 2013

Touché Amore and Balance And Composure have both just put out two VERY exciting albums this month -- and last night they celebrated together in Los Angeles. The small show was held at Los Globes in Silverlake, CA and was filled to the brim with rowdy fans that wanted to let lose. Touché is known for having fans that actively participate during their set, so the VERY low stage added to the atmosphere, excitement and added element of fear.

B&C's new record has quickly become a favorite of mine and hearing songs like "Parachute" and "Reflection" live were just what I needed. Jon Simmons' voice live has such a raw quality I couldn’t get enough of it. I appreciated that both bands shared how proud they are of one another for how far they have come and their new albums. Always value when bands are truly supportive to each other for no other reason than real friendship.

Just some pals doing pal things.

Touché set was unlike anything I had ever seen before. Their new album, Is Survived By... just came out this week so the set was comprised of mostly older songs. The crowd was absolute mayhem. Like I mentioned earlier, the stage was very low so Jeremy Bolm was facing off again 500 enthusiastic fans that knew every word, to every song. It looked intimidating and he even said, "I have never been more scared for someone in my life."

Here's a short video I took to give you an idea. It was so amazing.

Was refreshing to see such a raw show that didn't rely on production to make it big. It was a small show in size but was big on emotion and passion. I left feeling so much better than I did walking in.

The sign of a good show. #musicrules.

Lorde's Rooftop Set In Hollywood: 'Let Me Live That Fantasy'

Sara Scoggs
Sara Scoggs Sep 25, 2013

I am sure all of you have seen this video and have heard this song.

Lorde is the 16-year-old wonderkind who is tearing up the charts and proving artistry is still alive and thriving in popular music. Today Buzznet was invited to see her perform on top of the Hollywood Tower Hotel for LA’s ALT 98.7. I knew she would be great live, but she was for many unexpected reasons.

Live the New Zealand native is poised, sultry and captivating. Her electronic/pop/indie/alternative sound is refreshing and her voice live is beyond impressive. She has a beautiful lower register and when she reaches higher she has incredible control over her instrument.  I was very impressed as she ran thought about 5 songs ending with her hit, “Royals.” We only had a taste of what she can offer live and I can only image what a full show would be like. I hope she gets the same amount of attention Lana Del Rey did last year, she trutly deserves it.

Also to note she is just beautiful and her early 2000s Keri Russell hair made me green with envy. So exciting to see a talent like he’s being embraced by popular culture and I am anxious to give her new debut album, Pure Heroine a listen. #musicrules
